Why a gas filled shock absorber?
In principle, gas-filled (in this case with air) shock absorbers are the same as a “normal” shock absorber. The big difference now is that the gas causes the shock absorbers on the output stroke to return to their original length in a controlled manner.
With a normal shock absorber, that is not done, so they can simply put “jump back” uncontrollably. That can make your ride feel a little bouncing, with a gas damper that's gone!
