Pistons for your scooter or moped

Your first scooter or moped: how cool is that? But do you sometimes realize that there is a lot of technique in your moped or scooter? We're going to tell you more about the plunger. What is a plunger? How do you order it online? How do you replace the plunger? And what is a 2-stroke and 4-stroke piston? Just to start with the first question: what is a piston? Another name is piston and it is a part of the piston machine. The piston allows the piston machine to move back and forth through the cylinder. This movement again ensures that the petrol is moved. Due to the power of the movement, other parts in your scooter or moped will also move and you thus move forward. A piston is therefore indispensable.

Piston replacement scooter

An expensive service at the garage is therefore not necessary, you just do the replacement yourself!

  • First, collect the stuff you need: a socket wrench 21 or spark plug wrench, an Allen wrench 5 (check out what type of scooter you have for the size!) , a Phillips head and a flat head screwdriver, a tip pliers (but a circliprod is also good), a socket wrench 10 (the size here also depends on the type of scooter) and of course a new piston.
  • Ensure a clean, spacious and bright workplace.
  • Unscrew all caps. With less key experience, it is best to leave the engine block in place, otherwise you can remove it for more visibility and space.
  • Unscrew the carburetor. You do this with a screwdriver. It depends on the type of scooter whether you do this with a Phillips head screwdriver or a flat head screwdriver.
  • Take away the cold cover. This hood has ventilation holes and sits next to the exhaust. To disassemble, you need an Allen key.
  • Now you can remove the spark plug cap from the spark plug. Leave this one whole! Then unscrew the spark plug with the 21 wrench or spark plug wrench. But we advise you to change the spark plug at the same time as the piston.
  • Unscrew the exhaust with key 10.
  • Unscrew the cylinder head and cylinder. For the nuts that hold the cylinder head, you can use a socket wrench 10.
  • Now dismantle the plunger. Put an old cloth in the sump to prevent mess from entering it. After that, you can unload the piston pen springs on both sides of the piston. Make sure these don't end up in the engine block!! You do this with a pointed pliers. Then push the piston pin to the side with a flat screwdriver and then the plunger will come off when it is good.
  • Check the seam bearing. This is between the connecting rod and the piston pin. A seam bearing looks like a metal tube with pins inside. These pens must all be in tact, otherwise you will have to buy a new one.
  • Put the piston rings back. Note: if you have 2 piston rings, it may be that they are different and then you have to check the manual which spring should be where.
  • Put the plunger back. Make sure that the 1st circuit clip is first restored and check carefully if the needle bearing is back in place. Place the piston on the connecting rod and slide the plunger to the side without a circuit. It is important that the arrow on the plunger is always down.
  • Replace the foot gasket. Then clean the surface well. The old canvas from the crankcase opening is allowed out again. After that, you can put the new gasket in.
  • Replace the cylinder. Grease the inside well to prevent scratches. After that, you can restore the cylinder head.
  • Put the exhaust back again.
  • Replace the spark plug. If you buy a new one, make sure you have the right one. Otherwise, you will damage the piston and spark plug.
  • Replace the cooling hood again.
  • Don't forget to test and adjust your engine block again.

2-stroke and 4-stroke pistons

With a 2-stroke piston, the piston only goes up and down once with each ignition. With a 4-stroke piston, this happens 2x. The 4-stroke piston is and lasts longer. He can also handle more power. The 2-stroke piston consumes enormously and can handle less. This will also last less long.
