You hold the spark plug spark tester pin against your spark plug (while the spark plug is simply mounted in your cylinder head and the spark plug cap and cable are also connected.) and then try to start. If you hold the pin properly on the spark plug, you should see the light flashing. Always try this a few times. Both with kickstarter and electric starter, provided you have it. If you don't have a spark, your spark plug, spark plug cap, spark plug cable (or maybe even your ignition) is faulty.
