The rim tape is one of the important parts of a wheel. It's just a thin ribbon that lies in the rim, but crucial! When a rim has spokes, it often means a row of sharp spoke points on the inside of the rim. You can't see this when the inner tube and tire are mounted. If this rim tape is not in it, the spokes can very easily break the inner tube and thus sand or stab leak. This is where the rim tape comes around the corner, which is placed over the spokes, so that the spokes push against the ribbon, rather than against the fragile inner tube. That's why the rim tape is important. The size of the rim tape is determined by the inch size of your rims and the width of the gutter in which the ribbon lies.
