Help with Cdi / ECU / limiter selection

CDI

All scooters are equipped with a 12V electrical system. The ignition of the engine is controlled by the CDI, which stands for Capacitor Discharge Ignition. The role of the CDI is to ensure that combustion occurs at the right timing in the engine. In the case of a 2-stroke scooter, the CDI has little influence on the scooter's speed, unlike a 4-stroke engine. 4-stroke scooters are usually limited by the CDI. By replacing the CDI with a more performance-oriented version, the scooter's speed can be increased.

ECU

An ECU (Engine Control Unit) is also considered as the brain of a scooter. The ECU can be found in scooters with a fuel injection engine. The ECU controls, among other things, the ignition and fuel injection. An ECU also receives information from various sensors on the scooter to ensure everything functions correctly. If your scooter is equipped with an ECU, it can also be read by an authorized dealer. A tuner can also modify the settings of the ECU during the reading process, which can increase the power output.

Which CDI/ECU/limiter is suitable for my scooter and what should I pay attention to?

Piaggio/Vespa

There is a wide range of CDIs available for these engines, which can make it challenging to choose the CDI that best suits your configuration.

The original brands provided by Piaggio are ''Ducati and Kokusan.''

How do I know which engine I have on my Piaggio/Vespa?

Piaggio Vespa came to the market with different engines, here is an overview:

  • Piaggio 2-stroke engine
  • Piaggio 4-stroke engine 2v (2 valves)
  • Piaggio 4-stroke engine 4v (4 valves)
  • Piaggio 4-stroke engine 3v (3 valves iget injection Euro 4)

Piaggio 2-stroke engine

The easiest and quickest way is to check under the seat if you also have an oil cap next to the fuel cap. If you have an oil cap as well, then you have a 2-stroke engine.

These engines will be delivered from the model year 2018 onwards. These engines are fuel-injected. You can recognize an iget engine if you don't have a kickstart. Or if you remove the helmet compartment, you will see an injector instead of a carburetor. A third check is to see if the exhaust is equipped with a lambda sensor.

Chinese Gy6 Scooter

You will find these engine blocks on all Chinese scooters. While you might think that every CDI is suitable for a Gy6, unfortunately, that is not the case, and it is difficult to determine which one is suitable for your Chinese scooter. There are different types available, so before ordering, compare your current CDI with the photo.
