Help choosing spark plugs

A faulty spark plug causes the engine to run erratically. This results in a lot of wear and damage to the engine. Additionally, the engine cannot provide enough power to run smoothly. Therefore, it is wise to replace the spark plug during maintenance. It is important for the spark plug to produce a good spark. The spark plug is the foundation of a properly functioning engine.

Replacing an NGK Spark Plug

To replace a spark plug, use a spark plug wrench. Ensure that the area around the spark plug is clean to prevent any dirt from entering the engine. After removing the old spark plug, you can examine its appearance. You can check the engine's combustion by observing the color on the top of the spark plug.

A good combustion is indicated by a brown coffee/milk color. Soot deposits can indicate low compression pressure and poor combustion due to a rich mixture. If a spark plug has turned white, it may mean it has overheated. The cause could be a too small nozzle or insufficient heat range of the spark plug. In this case, it is advisable to choose a spark plug with a higher heat range. For high-performance cylinders, "colder" spark plugs are required as these cylinders often operate at high RPM.

To avoid damaging the threading, it is best to hand-tighten the spark plug as far as possible to ensure it is straight. Then, tighten the spark plug at the correct torque using a spark plug wrench.

While inspecting the spark plug, also check the condition of the spark plug wire inside the spark plug boot. A worn spark plug wire may show signs of porosity (cracks in the wire).

When a spark plug no longer "clicks" correctly, it is best to replace it.

Please note that a spark plug should be replaced when the engine is cold! This is due to expansion caused by heat.
