GY6 engine choice help (carburetor version)

Have you ever ridden with too little oil? Or have you covered a lot of kilometers with your scooter and the engine starts to noticeably wear out? In such cases, it often leads to an expensive repair bill. Cylinder, piston, crankshaft - these are challenging parts to replace, and it requires a significant amount of time. If a garage handles the repair for you, you'll end up spending a lot of money on labor charges.

For Chinese scooters, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire engine block. These engines are relatively inexpensive and relatively easy to replace.

The so-called GY6 engine is common in "Chinese" scooters. The basic foundations of these engines are all the same with a few differences. The following types of engine blocks are in circulation. The main differences are explained below:

GY6 12 inch short shaft engine block

GY6 10 inch short shaft engine block

10 inch long shaft GY6 engine block

GY6 long axle 10 inch 125cc engine block (not suitable for 50cc scooters)

Scooters have different wheel sizes, which are indicated in inches. You can find the size on the side of the tire. A scooter with 12-inch wheels has a slightly longer engine than a scooter with 10-inch wheels.

First, check the tire size of your scooter.

Another difference between the various engine blocks is the length of the rear axle, also known as the wheel axle or output shaft. There are engine blocks with a short wheel axle and a long wheel axle. Some scooters have a shock absorber on each side of the rear wheel. Is this the case for you? Then you need an engine block with a long axle. Do you have only one rear shock absorber? Then you need the engine block with the short axle!

The engine blocks come already equipped with ignition system, flywheel, variator, clutch, V-belt, and starter.

Please note that the engine blocks we provide are unrestricted. The maximum speed you will achieve with the new engine will depend on the CDI (ignition module) used. In order to limit the scooter's speed to a maximum of 25 or 45 km/h, you will often need to install a suitable CDI in combination with a limiting washer in the variator after installing the engine block. The weight of the variator rollers also plays a role. It is a matter of adjustment and testing.

The above engine blocks are only suitable for Chinese scooters produced before 2018. They are not compatible with Euro 4 and 5 models produced from 2018 onwards.

Received a new engine block, what to pay attention to?

The engines we provide are brand new and not refurbished. The engines come with engine oil and transmission oil. These are already in the engine block. We recommend checking the oil beforehand to be 100% sure that there is enough oil. We also suggest replacing the oil with fully synthetic 10W40 engine oil after 500 km.

The valve clearance can be checked after 1500 km. Watch the video on our YouTube channel to see how it works. The valve clearance for GY6 engines is 0.10 mm for both intake and exhaust.

Ignition:

It is possible that the ignition of the new engine block has a different connection than the old ignition. GY6 engines have two types of ignition. Due to ongoing changes in the factory, it is difficult to indicate which type of ignition is provided with the engine. In such cases, please replace the ignition (see video).

Zandri has also created an assembly video that demonstrates how to assemble a new engine block. We recommend ordering it to see and have a clear understanding of the work involved.
