Of course, a gas cable is all nice and nice. But once you're up to speed, it's nice if you can stop too. The cables have an inner and an outer cable, the inner cable does the hard work and the outer cable protects the inner cable against wear, dirt and the weather.

You may sometimes need to adjust (tighten) the brake cable once installed, because your brakes wear out and the cable loosens. (this is the case with drum brakes)
The adjustment is often done with a nut at the end of the cable. It can sit near your steering wheel, or near your wheel.
