A front fork is important because it ensures that your contact with the road remains good, by initially pressing the tire to the ground, but also by absorbing all shocks so that your front wheel stays on the ground. Without a good, functional front fork, it would bounce off the ground and you won't have good contact with the road. If your front fork is worn out (or a seal), it will sometimes leak oil, but this is not necessarily necessary.
